용두1동 도시환경정비사업은 주거와 상업을 복합화하여 낡고 쇠퇴된 도심의 환경을 개선하는 동대문구의 숙원사업이다. 4거리에서의 접근성과 중저층의 주변 환경을 고려하여 모든 방향에서 정면성을 갖도록 조형되었다. 노출 발코니와 매스 중앙부의 편의시설을 매스 전체를 감 싸돌며 나선형으로 연결하여 다이내믹한 도시 조망을 누릴 수 있도록 했다. 거대한 매스를 5개 층 단위로 분절하고 계단식으로 적층 하는 수법은 주변의 맥락을 수용하면서도 기존 도시에 새로운 변화를 불어넣어 생동감이 넘치는 도시경관이 연출되도록 하는 새로운 시도가 될 것이다.
Yongdu 1-dong Urban Environment Improvement Project is a long-cherished project of Dongdaemun-gu that improves the old and declining urban environment by combining housing and commerce. Considering the accessibility at four streets and the surrounding environment of the mid- to low-rise floors, it is designed to be frontal in all directions. The exposed balconies and amenities of the center of the mass were wrapped around the entire mass and connected in a spiral to provide a dynamic city view. The method of dividing the huge mass into five layers and stacking it in steps will be a new attempt to create a lively urban landscape by introducing new changes to existing cities while accommodating the surrounding context.
